Website owners, online marketers, and so-called gurus often disageee about the keys to success in the world of online business. But, there is one universal point of agreement: if you can't get traffic to your site, your days are numbered. Nothing can compensate for a lack of website traffic.

Many webmasters spend a lot of money on advertising. They purchase large email campaigns, advertise on Google and Yahoo, and even buy radio and TV time. But, fortunately, you do not have to make expenditures of that magnitude.

Here is how you can generate plenty of traffic on a budget.

1. My favorite traffic generating technique is article wrting. That's because it works...and it works quickly. The methodology is simple: write a few articles that the kinds of folks likely to visit your site will find interesting. Send them to article distribution websites...there are several services and software tools which make it simple. End each article with an author's box (like mine, below) which includes a link or two to your website. Webmasters in need of content will reprint your article on their sites, and you will gain a link each time they do.

2. Exchanging links with other webmasters is a time tested way to generate immediate traffic and boost your site's search engine rankings. Remember that, in link building, quality often trumps quantity. Concentrate on webmasters whose sites cover topics on or related to yours, and sites of high quality.

3. Got a really good site? Or, got something to offer other website owners (an ebook, a calendar, etc.)? If so, try for some one way links. One way links can move you up the search engine ranking ladder faster than reciprocal links because the search engines consider them a true endorsement of your site.

4. Blog. Blog. Blog some more. A post a week would be great. A goal of one post a month should be your absolute minimum. Blog on subjects related to your website, and be sure your blog links to it.

5. Bloggers, even more than webmasters of "regular" websites, need lots of content. Offer them articles (with author's boxes containing links to your site , of course). They'll love you, and you'll pick up lots of links.

6. This may surprise you, but press releases can get you hundreds of links (and lots of publicity). There are agencies and software tools which will help you distribute your releases. Neither are expensive: you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I realize that not everyone can write. If you are "writing challenged", don't despair. You might have to search around awhile, but there are folks who write blog posts and/or articles for less than $10. Press release are generally more, but the cost is not prohibitive. Remember, your potential return for each project can be hundreds of links. And, you know what that means.
